Landfill Projects

Wendell Landfill Immediate Response Action
Maxymillian Technologies (MT) mobilized to the Wendell Landfill Site to perform emergency response action remediation services for the MA DEP. The landfill's steep embankments, consisting of a wide variety of demolition debris, were reported to be sliding from the 8-acre landfill boundaries towards nearby railroad tracks and a river at a rate of 2-3 inches a day. The landfill's highest elevation was 550 feet, greater than 40 feet above the 508-foot approved construction height. MT coordinated closely with MA DEP Wetlands Specialists and officials to apply several innovative and practical control measures and stabilization techniques.

MT employed their largest capacity equipment and a majority of their most experienced operators and personnel to complete the highly accelerated schedule. MT first used dozers to cut access roads throughout the site that consisted of 4-8" stone for maximum stabilization and drainage. After road installation, MT mobilized excavators with up to 72 feet of reach and a fleet of 35 yard Rough terrain trucks to transfer material to new storage cells at a high rate. MT moved tens of thousands of cubic yards of material, requiring thousands of truckloads.

MT placed extensive storm-water management controls to address the highly sensitive landfill conditions. In response to site-specific runoff problems on the north side of the site, MT installed a sediment catching wall specially designed by DEP. This economical water filtration solution consisted of several rock layers that filtered runoff destined for the Miller's Falls River below. In addition, MT constructed two sedimentation and leaching catch basins to collect runoff. The water basins were lined and divided by stone check dams that served as filters for water leaving the site.

MT also implemented numerous stabilization measures. On the south face, MT installed filter fabric to prevent the fragile banks from erosion resulting from weather conditions. On the rapidly deteriorating vertical north face, MT installed a manhole and steel plate system to allow continued collection of leachate from the landfill. On the east face, the banks were found to be 1 to 1 horizontal to vertical ratio; much steeper than the allowable 3 to 1 ratio under MA regulations. MT implemented stone water channels, pipes, waterways and hydro seeding to prevent erosion and deterioration of this bank.

MT placed a high priority on health and safety throughout all operations. The full time Health and Safety Officer conducted regular air monitoring. MT consistently applied dust control measures to protect workers and the surrounding community. Water was also accessible via pumps to all areas of the site in the event of fire. MT's highly reliable Site Support Services Team cooperated at great lengths to complete the remedial response for the MA DEP in the fast tracked- six month schedule.
