Maxymillian Technologies' (MT) RE·SOIL facility thermally treats and
recycles petroleum and MGP-contaminated soils at a fixed location in
North Adams, MA. MT primarily contracts with major oil companies and
utility companies, as well as industrial, public and private companies.
MT works with these companies to coordinate the characterization,
transportation, storage, materials handling and thermal treatment of
contaminated soils. MT offers pollution liability insurance and
regularly conducts compliance and safety audits.
RE·SOIL is permitted to thermally treat and recycle soil
contaminated with both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and
semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). In 1995, RE·SOIL was
re-permitted to also accept former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) waste.
MT works closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection to define permit conditions and maintain public acceptance.
RE·SOIL operates under a Class A Recycling Permit (No. WR92-9). RE·SOIL
is classified as a low to medium temperature thermal desorption unit.
Kiln soil exit temperatures range from 300-1000°F and afterburner exit
temperatures range from 1400-1800°F, with a residence time in excess of
1.0 second. The unit is permitted to operate 8 hours per day/ 6 days
per week, and has an on-stream time of over 90%. Specially heated
enclosures, heat tracing devices, and a drainage system allow
year-round operation, even in the worst weather conditions.
RE·SOIL has a maximum throughput rate of 100 tons per
hour. The system has been in operation since July of 1989 and has
processed several hundred thousand tons of contaminated material to
date. Additionally, the site has the capacity to store 10,000 tons of
material within its two storage buildings.
MT has also made significant recent investments to
capture waste heat from the existing process to increase throughput and
improve the overall on-line factor of the unit.
Soil is thoroughly tested before and after treatment at
RE·SOIL. Before soil is accepted, it must be tested by a certified
laboratory for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) every 100 cubic yards
and for VOCs, metals, PCBs, flashpoint, reactivity, pH, and free
liquids.
