Residential Properties Remediation
MT was contracted by GE to remediate a large number of Pittsfield residential PCB-contaminated properties. Approximately 207 properties were tested with 180 needing remediation. The properties were found to contain PCB-contaminated fill that GE had given away to residents and contractors from 1948-1970.
A highly cooperative effort allowed residences to be cleaned up in record time with MT often beginning and completing a property remediation in one week or less. Our efforts were specific to each residence and included removing hundreds of yards of soil, replacing topsoil, and re-sodding and planting. All of this work was conducted with the highest sensitivity to residents.
Many of the residential sites were located on the Housatonic River, requiring MT to implement extensive erosion control systems and install steel sheet piling, minimizing the impact and the resident's direct exposure to cleanup operations. In the wet areas, MT employed sheeting and bypassing techniques to isolate the contaminated soils and divert the water away from the excavation and backfill activities. The bypassing systems included dams and outlet pipes that allowed water to flow and not disrupt site operations. MT also conducted extensive groundwater treatment of the residential areas.
