Johnstown MGP Site Interim Remedial Measure

MT remediated and disposed of 8,500 cubic yards of soils associated with a former Manufactured Gas Plant. MT developed an efficient strategy for moving across the site to excavate and backfill in three large areas containing two former gas holders.

Prior to excavation, MT installed sheeting for earth support and water control in the contaminated areas. MT then excavated and sorted material according to the potential contamination level. An engineer assessed the contamination levels through analytical testing and either approved as suitable backfill or flagged for MT to stage and properly dispose of off-site.

Throughout this process, MT conducted dewatering and water treatment to remove excessive moisture from contaminated soils. MT continually monitored air emissions, and employed an odor suppressant system to control potential odors.

In preparation for one of the larger areas of excavation, MT erected two connected sprung structures with a Vapor Management System to maintain negative air pressure and treat collected air.

MT also restored the Cayadutta Creek embankment and removed miscellaneous structures associated with the remediation effort. In addition, MT created an aesthetically pleasing environment that met the Owner and City's criteria.
