Dover Former Manufactured Gas Plant Site Remediation

MT remediated this former MGP Site in New Jersey, including lowering the total site elevation and constructing an environmentally secure HDPE drainage system.

Initial soil characterization determined that approximately one-half of the soils were RCRA hazardous and also needed to be stabilized before shipping off-site. To handle the soil pre-treatment activities, MT constructed a temporary on-site building with a complex carbon bed air handling system.

MT excavated and disposed of 35,000 tons of MGP soils and debris. Following excavation, MT stockpiled the soils and conducted pre-treatment activities as needed. The soil was then sampled to verify that it was non-hazardous and met disposal facility requirements. MT implemented materials handling techniques that ultimately limited the amount of soil requiring off-site disposal.

For site restoration activities, MT established the drainage system, an asphalt cap, and landscaped the area. The drainage system consisted of two drainage swales and two box culverts; one beneath the railroad tracks and the other beneath the road. MT decommissioned and temporarily removed a segment of the railroad tracks to install the box culvert, then restored the tracks to their former state.
