Former Fort Devens Landfill Operations and Closure

MT was selected under a US Army Corps of Engineers Remedial Action Contract to conduct landfill operations and closure activities at the former Fort Devens Army Base near the Town of Ayer, Massachusetts.

MT commenced operations by hauling non-hazardous debris and soil from six disposal areas. MT hauled 368,000 tons of material and managed an additional 215,000 tons to a 9-acre consolidation lined landfill on the property. Materials were then placed and compacted. The schedule required a production schedule of 2,300 tons/day.

MT completed the landfill closure project by constructing a landfill cap. The cap procedure consisted of furnishing and installing the following: 27,000 tons of subgrade material, 800,000 sf of a geocomposite layer, 400,000 sf of a Very Flexible Polyethylene Liner, 25,500 tons of soil for the protective layer, 52,000 tons of soil for the vegetative support layer, 10,000 cy of topsoil, gas vents and 400,000 sf of seeding and the erosion control blanket for the landfill. MT also operated and managed the site leachate collection system.
