Morton Bioremediation Project
Maxymillian Technologies (MT) remediated contaminated soils located at
Morton International's former sodium borohydride manufacturing facility
in Danvers, MA. The facility was a Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection listed site in the Massachusetts Contingency
Plan Program. The contaminated area contained mineral oil, heat
transfer oil, fuel oil, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and LNAPLs
(Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids). TPH concentrations were in excess of
10,000 ppm and LNAPLs were also present in high levels.
Preliminary treatability tests demonstrated that
hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were present in the contaminated soil in
large numbers. As a result, MT employed a form of Bioremediation,
called land farming, to most efficiently address the site contaminants.
Land farming required MT to spread an initial application
of a fertilizer mixture that was proven effective during the
treatability-testing period. The fertilizer enhanced the growth of the
hydrocarbon degrading bacteria population already present in the soil.
MT applied the fertilizer mixture throughout the site and then tilled
the soil to a depth of 3 feet. MT implemented bi-weekly irrigation and
soil tilling during the following 10-week period. MT properly
decontaminated the equipment after each tilling event to reduce the
possibility of soil re-contamination resulting from contact of the
machinery with the treated soil.
At the tenth week, MT reapplied the fertilizer mixture to
the soil. MT also conducted consequent tillage and irrigation for a
second 10-week period. MT technicians took water content measurements
to ensure optimal conditions for supporting the hydrocarbon-degrading
bacteria population. Proper dust and erosion control measures were high
priority for MT at all times.
After analytical testing indicated that the soil
remediation was successful, MT graded the soil and restored the site
and support areas. MT successfully completed the project on a tight
schedule, facilitated by a high level of communication between MT and
both the engineer and site owner.
