Messer Street Former Manufactured Gas Plant Remediation - Phase I & II
Maxymillian Technologies served as the remedial construction contractor
to remove soils and river/bay sediments contaminated with coal tar
byproducts. Extensive sitework in and around waterways placed a special
emphasis on sheeting, dredging technology, and water treatment.
Phase I work included Waterloo Sheeting installation,
water treatment (60,000 gallons), excavation (2200 tons), surgical
sediment vacuuming, installation of a passive recovery system,
backfill, and site restoration. MT coordinated highly technical and
challenging Waterloo sheetpile barrier installation with the Plymouth
& Lincoln Railroad and Waterloo licensed personnel, while
consistently hosting regulators and extensive community and media
representatives.
After successfully completing Phase I of the Messer Street
remediation, MT was re-contracted to finish the remainder of the
project. Once the source materials had been substantially removed, and
the Phase I barrier cell installed, Phase II of the project included
the removal of over 17,000 cubic yards of sediments from the adjacent
river.
MT installed extensive 30-foot deep temporary sheets and
special turbidity controls in the river. During the most intense part
of the project, the 30-day drawdown, MT worked additional shifts and 6
days per week to maximize the amount of materials removed. This
involved multiple crews, several excavators, including 2 low ground
pressure long reach excavators, and an increase in project management
personnel. During the drawdown, MT removed over 6800 cubic yards, or
43% more than our minimum success criteria. Our removal rate ranged
from 350 to 600 cubic yards per day.
MT installed a Water Treatment System designed, owned, and
operated by MT, and treated/discharged 215,000 gallons of water that
had met regulatory criteria.
"You accomplished every element of the workplan with
the highest professional standards and under budget…This project now
becomes the standard for which other site remediation projects will be
measured." -Ron Klattenburg, NU
