Waltham MGP Remediation
Maxymillian Technologies (MT) excavated and disposed of VOC & PAH
contaminated soils at the Waltham Former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP)
Site. The site was bordered by the Charles River, sensitive wetlands
areas, and a housing development for the elderly.
MT started site activities with silt fence installation
and shoring around the 19th century site building to prevent possible
structural damage. MT completed the first excavation operations in the
wetlands area adjacent to the Charles River.
MT backfilled the area and re-vegetated. MT then
excavated a second area that included overburden and contaminated soil.
MT segregated overburden from the contaminated soil that was slated for
backfill. MT stockpiled contaminated soils in the laydown area and
covered the soils with woven polytarps to reduce erosion and to
eliminate contamination migration.
Half way through the project, the scope expanded to
include the demolition of an asbestos-contaminated building. MT first
decontaminated the building using MT asbestos removal supervisors and
technicians. MT then demolished and disposed of the building off-site.
During excavation activities, MT discovered tar holders in the area of
the building foundation that contained pure tar product. MT emptied,
containerized and sent the tar holders off-site for disposal.
MT processed the site's contaminated soil with a portable
processing plant. MT shredded and screened the soils to 1 inch minus.
Soil meeting the disposal requirements was transported to a New York
State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) facility for disposal. When
all waste material was transported off-site, MT re-vegetated the site
and paved all graveled areas.
