Site Remediation Projects

Housatonic River and Riverbank Excavation (GE Bldg. 68)
Maxymillian Technologies (MT) remediated a section of the Housatonic River located directly adjacent to GE Building 68. In the late 1960's, a liquid PCB storage tank located in Building 68 collapsed, leaking its contents onto bank soils and river sediments. In 1996, US EPA issued an order for the removal of contaminated materials after materials were determined to contain elevated levels of PCBs.

Remediation activities began with the installation of 900 feet of steel sheeting, both permanent and temporary, 20 feet deep. The impervious Waterloo sheet pile wall stopped the migration of DNAPL into the river.

MT then dredged and disposed of off-site, approximately 4,000 cubic yards of river sediment. The areas and volumes addressed also included 2,000 in situ cy of bank soils in a 500-ft. length of the riverbank between Building 68 and the Housatonic River. MT excavated riverbank soils down to the water table, approximately 13 ft. below the original grade.

All soil removal operations included river sediment dredging, appropriate sediment stabilization and water diversion, water collection and on-site water treatment. MT used a 72' long boom excavator that extended from the riverbank to the center of the river.

Once the contaminated sediment was removed, MT placed geotextile and clean fill to within 8" of original grade. MT lined the dredged area with 8" minus rock fill to stabilize the river bottom. MT then installed vegetative cover in the upper portion of backfilled area to restore the excavation to its original grade and to prevent soil erosion.
