Soil Facilities

EN•CAP Cold Batch Asphalt Encapsulation System
Maxymillian Technologies (MT) owns and operates a mobile asphalt encapsulation facility (EN•CAP) with 200+ tons per hour capacity. The EN•CAP/stabilization process operates under a Class A Recycling Permit under the MA Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP).EN•CAP stabilizes petroleum contaminated products through a cold-mix asphalt emulsion/liquid asphalt batching system to make them available for reuse as a sub-base for paved areas.

EN•CAP, with a 5,000 ton storage capacity, primarily accepts contaminated soil from spills or leaks at sites throughout the Northeast. When sufficient quantities of soil are accumulated (approximately 1000 ton batches), MT processes the material issues Certificates of Recycling to the generators.

The EN•CAP stabilization process involves four primary components: crusher/shredder, cold storage bins, pugmill and asphalt emulsion storage tank. MT feeds contaminated material into the crusher/shredder where it is reduced to 2" minus. From the crusher/shredder, the material moves by conveyor to the Cold Storage Bins. The equipment operator regulates material flow and maintains a constant feed rate to the pugmill. Specifically formulated asphalt emulsion is pumped to nozzles located at the entrance of the pugmill and is sprayed onto the material. The emulsion to material ratio is regulated by the metering pump, automatically controlled by the weigh scale. The mixing process within the Pugmill involves the blending of material and emulsions to ensure proper coating.

Pugmill mixing occurs when blades, positioned in a helical pattern on a horizontal shaft, turn in a closed cylinder. Spray bars located at the inlet of the pugmill provide a precise amount of asphalt emulsion to the contaminated soil. In the enclosed chamber, the contaminated soils are mixed while being pushed toward the discharge end. The high shearing action ensures that all soil particles are thoroughly coated with the asphalt emulsion. The manufactured asphalt product is stockpiled and allowed to cure for one to four days prior to spreading and rolling the material.
